In this edition of the diplomat’s Corner, we take a brief look at the outstanding profile of the Nigerian philanthropist and diplomat Peter Onu.
Peter Onu was not just a seasoned diplomat but was also a great philanthropist. Before playing a major role in the African continent, he had served previously as a Nigerian ambassador to the Republic of Germany and also at the Embassy of Nigeria in Moscow, Russia.
He became the Secretary General of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) from 1983 to 1985, a position he held for three years before exiting.
Education: Peter Onu was a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He studied law and also had several advanced degrees in Law.
Philanthropic Activities: Onu was passionate about education. In lagos state Nigeria, a law library complex was built by him. In addition, he sponsored many young Nigeria through secondary and Universities education.
Political Life: Peter Onu as earlier mentioned had served in several foreign missions as Nigerian ambassador and as political adviser to several Nigerian head of states. His nomination to the OAU came with several controversies. However, before taking over the mantle of leadership at the OAU from 197, Edem Kodjo the then Secretary General of the OAU who had served since 1978 had ended his tenure. He was the 5th Secretary General of the OAU.
